Once your Lipa Namba is active, customers can pay in two ways:
  • Scan your QR code — From a mobile money or bank app that supports QR payments.
  • Pay with your Lipa Namba — Through mobile money USSD menus or bank channels, without needing an app.
All MNOs and banks integrated with TIPS can be used to pay you.

Paying by QR Code

  1. Scan your QR code — Using a phone camera or the scan feature in a mobile money or bank app.
  2. Enter the amount — The customer types in how much they want to pay.
  3. Confirm the payment — They review the merchant details and authorize with their PIN or biometric.
  4. Receive confirmation — Both you and the customer get a payment confirmation.

Paying with Lipa Namba

Customers can also pay using your Lipa Namba directly:
  1. Open USSD or bank channel — Dial the mobile money USSD code or use SIM banking, internet banking, or a bank branch channel.
  2. Enter your Lipa Namba — Use your Lipa Namba as the payment reference.
  3. Enter the amount — The customer types in how much they want to pay.
  4. Confirm the payment — They authorize with their PIN and receive confirmation.
No app is required for USSD and bank channel payments.

What You See as a Merchant

  • Payments appear instantly in your Merchant Dashboard under transactions.
  • You receive dashboard notifications for successful payments.
  • If you use webhooks, payment events can be sent to your system automatically.

Tips for a Smooth Checkout

  • Display or share clearly — Show your QR code and Lipa Namba at a counter, receipt desk, website, checkout page, invoice, or customer message.
  • Confirm the amount — Customers enter the amount before authorizing payment.
  • Verify on your dashboard — Confirm payment in your dashboard before handing over goods or completing a service.
  • Use the branded poster — Download your poster from Collection settings for a clear, professional display.
